Below I have extracted what I feel a lay person would find easiest to read and follow. The link above is to this large study that is highly significant and extremely well done but you’ll need some good medicine/organic chemistry understand all that’s being said here. This is one of the best studies I’ve seen so it’s well worth the effort.
As always, please use the comment section below to ask me questions. That way everyone reading this blog can become part of the conversation and learn as a team.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural compound found in hemp and cannabis plants that belongs to the cannabinoid class of natural products. It is different from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in that it has less than 0.3% psychotropic effects. Indeed mixing CBD and THC was found to not work the THC apparently inhibiting the protective effects of CBD. CBD has been found to potentially regulate the host stress and antiviral inflammatory responses including the cytokine storms caused by coronaviruses. It is extremely cheap to produce even in very large quantities. So big pharma is not interested in this valuable compound and unlikely to produce it in quantity nor carry out any studies on it’s effects. So don’t expect to get too many studies coming out but focus on this one and I will keep searching for new data and will post it here on my blog as and when it is published.
An oral solution of CBD has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). CBD has been shown to inhibit the replication of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 in human lung epithelial cells. CBD pretreatment for two hours before infection with the virus potently inhibited viral replication, and no toxicity was observed at the effective doses. CBD worked in other human lung cell lines and monkey kidney cells and was effective against the Wuhan strain and three variants of concern. The CBD metabolite 7-OH-CBD also exhibited antiviral activity, while others did not work.
CBD acts at an early step after viral entry into cells and targets host cell processes. It inhibits viral RNA expression and reverses viral-induced changes in host gene expression, effectively eradicating viral RNA expression in the host cells. CBD prevents changes in the cell produced by the virus to force the cell to produce new viral particles. CBD induces strong activation of genes associated with the host stress response and interferon expression as part of its antiviral activity. CBD suppresses viral infection and promotes degradation of viral RNA. The RNA viruses it has been shown to work against are — Common cold (caused by rotaviruses and coronavirus), Influenza, SARS / MERS, Dengue, Hepatitis C, and E, Ebola, Rabies, Polio, Mumps and Measles. It is inevitable that activity against other RNA viruses will be found in the months to come as more studies are carried out.
CBD treatment significantly inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication in mice. The mice showed no signs of clinical disease, and CBD treatment significantly inhibited viral replication in lungs and nasal turbinates at day 5 after infection. A lower dose of CBD reduced viral load by 4.8-fold in lungs, while a higher dose reduced viral load by 40-fold in lungs. CBD is also negatively associated with indications of SARS-CoV-2 infection in patient medical records.
CBD has the potential to treat other RNA viral infections, including the common cold, influenza, SARS/MERS, dengue, hepatitis C and E, Ebola, rabies, polio, mumps, and measles. CBD inhibited HCV replication by 86.4%. However, its potential for treating hepatitis B has not been established.
Having read the above if you’d like to get your hands on some CBD oil to try and see if it works towards your protection against the many, many variants of coronaviruses floating around us humans now (thanks in main to the vaccines willy nilly meted out to uncaring/unsuspecting/un-studied humans) I am able to source this variety that I’ve found (over the last 3 years) to have protected many of friends and family members including ME! I have tested this particular brand at random from bottles I buy for myself and have found it not to vary too much as to render it useless. So you can rest assured that you’re getting a good product if you buy this one. That said if you find this for under KSh. 7500/- I’d be suspicious — might just be plain olive oil!
This is about 30 doses of 5 drops placed under your tongue once a day. It does not cause any drowsiness nor any ‘high’. Cost to you will be KSh. 7500/- payable to me by MPESA. If you give me a location pin I can have a rider deliver it right to your doorstep.
(If I am only able to source the 5,000mg strength (it happens from time to time) I usually get it for KSh. 4500/- per bottle and will be able to let you have that for KSh 5,500/- to defray delivery and my own purchase costs).
Now — here is the abstract from the same paper on Science Advances. In my opinion the formatting is better here than on PubMed.
Abstract
The spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic underscores the need for new treatments. Here, we report that cannabidiol (CBD) inhibits infection of SARS-CoV-2 in cells and mice. CBD and its metabolite 7-OH-CBD, but not THC or other congeneric cannabinoids tested, potently block SARS-CoV-2 replication in lung epithelial cells. CBD acts after viral entry, inhibiting viral gene expression and reversing many effects of SARS-CoV-2 on host gene transcription. CBD inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication in part by up-regulating the host IRE1α ribonuclease endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response and interferon signaling pathways. In matched groups of human patients from the National COVID Cohort Collaborative, CBD (100 mg/ml oral solution per medical records) had a significant negative association with positive SARS-CoV-2 tests. This study highlights CBD as a potential preventative agent for early-stage SARS-CoV-2 infection and merits future clinical trials. We caution against current use of non-medical formulations as a preventative or treatment therapy.
